The first managerial change in the Championship this year happened with a former manager of Crystal Palace and QPR.

Neil Warnock will leave his position as Huddersfield Town manager following the Terriers’ Championship match against Stoke City on Wednesday. Warnock formerly managed Queens Park Rangers and Crystal Palace.

With three losses and one tie in their first four league games, Huddersfield had a difficult start to the season. With consecutive victories over Rotherham United and West Brom, they have, however, made a turn for the better this month.

Late in the previous season, the Terriers hired Warnock, who led the team to a remarkable escape that was completed in the team’s penultimate match against Sheffield United. He was scheduled to leave the club in May, but he consented to stay one additional season to give the West Yorkshire organization more time to look for a long-term employment.

Warnock had time at both Crystal Palace and QPR. Between October 2007 and March 2010, he was in charge of 129 games at Selhurst Park. He left the Eagles for QPR on a three-and-a-half-year contract in March 2010, but was fired in January 2012 after bringing the club to the Premier League.

He returned to Palace in August 2014, but was fired in December of same year. He joined QPR as a first-team advisor in 2015 and took over as interim manager after Chris Ramsey left.

Huddersfield chief executive Jake Edwards addressed the club’s decision to break ways with Warnock, saying the club is now in a position to make that longer-term decision.

“I must begin this statement by saying, on behalf of everyone at the football club,” he stated.

“Once again, I cannot express my gratitude to Neil and Ronnie for everything they have done for this club.” I know they want to go out on a high with a win over Stoke City in midweek, and I’m confident they’ll get the send-off they deserve from the players and fans.”

“We’ve actually done what we set out to do really,” Warnock said of his decision to depart the club. Kevin, like Jake mentioned, has a three-year ambition to reach the Premier League. Dean [Hoyle] appealed for days and days and changed my mind, and I said I’d come back and help while I was needed.

“Once they said they wanted to bring someone in…yes, I thought it would be around Christmas time, but once they said that, I think they had to move on quickly.” If you are not desired, you want to go as soon as possible. I don’t mean it in the way it may appear – we always said we’d be honest with each other, and that’s exactly what we’ve done.
