JUST IN: Ongoing talk at the moment as Ac Milan draw to Newcastle united at UCL clash made Eddie Howe speaks with confidence

Eddie Howe praises Newcastle United’s ‘high level’ goalkeeping coaches during their trip to Milan.

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has expressed gratitude to his coaching staff for their assistance in keeping a clean sheet at the San Siro.

After a creditable draw against AC Milan, Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe praised his goalie coaches.

Newcastle now had two clean sheets in a row after beating Brentford 1-0 last weekend in the Premier League. Howe is pleased with Adam Bartlett, head of goalkeeping coaching, and 2022 backroom recruit Shwan Jalal.

Howe has improved his clean sheet record since shaking up the goalkeeping coaching staff, with 14 shutouts in the Premier League last season compared to eight in 2021/22 and just seven in 2020/21.

“All of the staff have a key role with the goalkeeping staff,” Howe told Chronicle Live. We have a strong goalkeeping group here. Shwan and Adam are dedicated to their work with us. They work very hard.

“We now have a large pool of goalkeepers because a few younger keepers have risen through the ranks, and it’s great to see them work.”

The clean sheet in Milan was the first time Newcastle had recorded a shutout on the opening night of the Champions League Group Stages, and it was a silent first for Howe’s backroom staff.

“It’s high level work that they (the goalkeeper staff) do,” Howe commented. They take great satisfaction in Nick Pope’s performances, but the entire goalkeeping unit that we have, as well as the entire coaching staff that we now have, is very strong, and hopefully the players get what they need.”

Aidan Harris, a 16-year-old recruit for the United goalkeepers, was named on the bench.

Meanwhile, former Toon goalkeeper Shay Given was called to serve as an ambassador in Milan this week after working closely with supporter liaison officer Matt Willis. On match day, Given met fans in the canal district and expanded on his work with the Magpies in America last summer.

Given was welcomed back to the club by the new Saudi-backed owners after a difficult exit when he was sold to Manchester City during the Mike Ashley period in 2009.
