SKYSPORT NOW: “The black cat is my home” major star reveal

Cardiff City’s ex-Sunderland player claims his family is ‘full Newcastle’ ahead of the match.

Jak Alnwick, a former Sunderland and Newcastle United goalkeeper, has reflected on his northern roots ahead of Cardiff’s showdown with the Black Cats on Sunday.

Jak Alnwick and his brother Ben Alnwick were both on the books at Sunderland at various times, with Jak moving for Newcastle United in 2008.

“It’s great that we have Sunderland and Middlesbrough coming up,” he told the BBC. “My father attends as many games as possible.” But it’s a six-hour drive down to Cardiff, so it’s not as easy for him to come down here.”

However, Jack Alnwick has declared that his family is “full Newcastle” ahead of Sunday’s Championship match at the Stadium of Light against Cardiff City.

“I switched when I was 15 because it was closer to my family’s house.” Sunderland was a bit of a journey; my father was working long hours and had to drive me there. To be honest, it was more of a family decision.”

Alnwick reflected on his jubilation in front of the travelling fans when Cardiff City defeated archrivals Swansea City last time out in the Championship.

“It’s a tough one,” he remarked. We’ve seen them celebrate a lot in recent years, so I believe that when you win, you should enjoy it because, at the end of the day, it’s a rivalry.

“As we saw last season, they had 30 people running across the pitch in front of our fans, so I thought I’d join in.”

“I’m off to Sunderland now.” I’ve played there a number of times since leaving Newcastle, but it doesn’t matter who I’m playing against. I am completely focused, regardless of who my opponent is.”

Alnwick did admit, though, that Sunderland fans are likely to be aware of his situation.

“If you get too involved in those kinds of games, it can have a negative effect.” So it’s head down and perform. It will be the same if I can make saves for the squad – three points. That’s what we’re after.”
