Newcastle United strike a £45 million ‘deal’ as Bruno Guimaraes ‘confirms’ new contract terms.

Newcastle United defeated Sheffield United 8-0 on Sunday; here are seven key takeaways from the game.

Europe? For Eddie Howe's Newcastle United, anything feels possible right now - The Athletic

Eddie Howe made four changes to the team that drew 0-0 at AC Milan on Tuesday in the Champions League. Elliot Anderson replaced Sandro Tonali in midfield, while Miguel Almiron, Harvey Barnes, and Callum Wilson replaced Jacob Murphy, Anthony Gordon, and Alexander Isak in the starting lineup.

Barnes’ second start of the season lasted only 12 minutes until he was forced to leave with an injury.

Howe said the winger had injured his toe after the game.

“He wasn’t too good,” The Magpies’ manager conceded. “I believe he has a toe problem, so he went over and felt something in his toe.”

“Early signs are there is an injury there but we don’t know what it is at this moment.”

Barnes was substituted after 12 minutes by Gordon, which proved to be a blessing in disguise for Newcastle. With a pair of dangerous balls into the box, Sheffield United may have just edged the opening minutes of the contest.

The introduction of Gordon, though, swiftly swung the game in Newcastle’s favor as the 22-year-old maintained his excellent form.

Sean Longstaff’s question to Anthony Gordon during the VAR review
Gordon surged into the box from the left and maintained the ball in play on the byline before bringing it back for Sean Longstaff to score the scoring less than 10 minutes after his arrival.

Longstaff looked to question the Magpies winger, ‘did that [the ball] go out?’ as he went up to Gordon to celebrate. A brief VAR check revealed that Gordon maintained the ball in play, despite the fact that it struck his hand before being transferred to Longstaff.

The goal remained and the floodgates quickly opened because the Magpies’ player gained no advantage from the ball hitting his hand, which was not seen to be in an unusual position, and he wasn’t the person to score.

The hat-trick by Kieran Trippier

After a masterful defensive performance at the San Siro, Kieran Trippier was lethal in attack on Sunday, grabbing three assists in 25 minutes.

Dan Burn headed home Trippier’s corner to make it 2-0 before Sven Botman scored his first goal for the club with a superbly directed header into the bottom left corner from Trippier’s free-kick.

Callum Wilson made it 4-0 after the break when he headed in Trippier’s brilliantly weighted cross from close range.

While other players have helped more goals in a single Premier League encounter, Trippier holds the unique distinction of becoming the first Premier League player to assist three headed goals in a single game.

However, that would not be the only one.

Newcastle United’s ‘bargain’ purchase of £45 million
When Newcastle United purchased Anthony Gordon from Everton for £45 million plus add-ons in January, it looked like a steep price to pay for a young talent. The sentiment lasted for the duration of Gordon’s first half-season on Tyneside, as he struggled to make an impression.

The youngster came and went and only scored once, in a 1-1 dead rubber draw against Chelsea on the penultimate day of the season.

However, following a successful summer in which he won the Under-21s European Championships with England and was named player of the tournament, the 22-year-old has returned to The Magpies as a brand new player.

Full of self-assurance and a thorn in most people’s sides

Bruno Guimaraes ‘confirms’ new contract

Bruno Guimaraes assisted Miguel Almiron’s sixth goal of the game before scoring himself to make it 7-0.

The Brazilian celebrated his goal in front of the visiting Magpies fans by tucking the ball inside his shirt to reveal that he and his fiancée Ana are expecting their second child, Pietro.

The 25-year-old then turned to the Newcastle supporters and declared, “I’m staying!” The Brazilian then kissed his shirt’s club crest.

The celebration, which was caught by The Magpie Channel and shared on Twitter, was in response to Guimaraes apparently signing a new contract with Newcastle until June 2028.
