Ricky Charlesworth, Sheffield Wednesday writer for YorkshireLive, gives the lowdown on the Owls ahead of Sunderland’s visit to Hillsborough.

Sunderland take on Championship basement side Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough on Friday night, with the Black Cats looking to put the frustration of their weekend defeat against Cardiff City behind them. Tony Mowbray’s men will come up against a Wednesday side in turmoil, with the newly-promoted Owls yet to win a game, a large segment of supporters fed up with owner Dejphon Chansiri, and now fans turning on Spanish coach Xisco Munoz who replaced promotion-winning boss Darren Moore in a surprise move over the summer.

There was a protest during Wednesday’s 1-1 draw with Middlesbrough last week when fans threw tennis balls onto the pitch to temporarily halt the game, and Saturday’s 3-0 defeat at Swansea City did nothing to improve the mood, so there is every chance of a repeat when Sunderland visit. The Owls are struggling, but the Black Cats have an opportunity to win their fourth game in a run and third away win in a row after victories at QPR and Blackburn Rovers last week.

How would you rate Wednesday’s season-opening performance

In a nutshell, abysmal. Even at this early stage, two points from a possible 24 sees them cut off from safety. Xisco Munoz, the new boss, has repeatedly changed his employees and techniques, and it isn’t working.
They are toothless up front, and their defense needs to improve drastically. Some of the defense against Swansea last weekend was juvenile.

What reactions have fans had to the results and performances thus far?

Chants from the sold-out away end at Swansea urging Xisco Munoz to leave say it all. Other cries followed, criticizing his football style.

In reality, Wednesday does not appear to be a knowledgeable team.

What do fans make of the departure of Darren Moore and the appointment of Xisco Munoz?

The news came just three weeks after Wednesday won at Wembley and was completely out of the blue. Moore was a hugely popular figure and given he had just got them promoted, many feel it made sense to stay with him.

Nevertheless, fans were willing to give Munoz a chance given his past promotion at Watford. He’s also extremely likeable but that matters little if results aren’t going your way.

The longer the poor run has gone on the more supporters have become unhappy about the situation, leading to last week’s chants and the hugely unhappy vibe that exists across the social media landscape right now.
