Newcastle United defeated Manchester City in the Carabao Cup, and Pep Guardiola praised them.

At St James’ Park, it was a game of two halves, with Guardiola’s team dominating the first but failing to break through. After the break, United improved greatly, and Alexander Isak’s strike in the 53rd minute proved decisive.

Rather than bemoan his team’s early withdrawal from a competition they’ve won six times in the last ten years, Guardiola praised Eddie Howe’s Magpies.

“First and foremost, congratulations to Newcastle on their success,” Man City manager Pep Guardiola stated. I told the guys in the dressing room that we were there because of the way we played compared to last season against Southampton.

“We were brilliant in the first half, especially for the way we played.” Newcastle, I believe, couldn’t accept [our first-half domination], so they upped the rhythm, aggression, and kicking, and they were there, more aggressive.

“We struggled a little, but that’s to be expected.” I predicted at halftime that the second half would not be like the first.

“I said we’d be there in the hard times, and we were. We couldn’t win with the crowd in the end. Newcastle deserves congratulations.

“We have incredible positive things for many, many players because of their excellent play.” We have three more competitions to play in after the competitions we won and the European Super Cup.

“For the rest of the teams, good luck for the Carabao Cup.”

Following a heavy schedule of Premier League and Champions League play, both teams made changes for the match.

Tino Livramento, Lewis Hall, and Lewis Miley made their full debuts, while Jamaal Lascelles and Paul Dummett earned their first starts in the 8-0 triumph over Sheffield United on Sunday.
