JUST IN: Southampton forward key man made known to club of his next move in soonest time

Southampton’s Amo-Ameyaw targets the U17 World Cup with England.

Sam Amo-Ameyaw of the Saints is hoping to make England’s squad for the upcoming FIFA Under-17 World Cup in Indonesia in 2023.

Ryan Garry’s selection for the Under-17 European Championships in Hungary this summer did not include the 17-year-old.

While England’s squad, which included Tyler Dibling and Jayden Meghoma, only made it to the quarterfinals, they did qualify for the Under-17 World Cup by defeating Switzerland in a qualification playoff.

Amo-Ameyaw was recently called up to England’s Under-18 squad after impressing with Southampton’s first team earlier this season.

When asked about his immediate international objectives by the Daily Echo, the winger confessed that he hopes to secure a ticket on the plane to Indonesia.

“It was fantastic (to leave with the Under-18s).” I haven’t been called up for the last three camps, but I believe I’ve proven myself worthy of a return.

“There will be another camp.” The Under-17 World Cup will take place a few weeks after this training. Hopefully, I’ll be able to participate as well.

“I just have to keep pushing with the Under-21s or the first team, whichever it is, and keep showing my capabilities.”

Amo-Ameyaw has returned to Under-21 play after being a member of Russell Martin’s senior team for Southampton’s opening eight games of the 2023-24 season.

When measuring up defenders considerably older than himself, it’s a facet of his game he hasn’t shied away from. Amo-Ameyaw admitted that taking on players is an important element of his game.

“Beating a player just gives me confidence to keep doing it.” That is what I strive for in every game, to boost my confidence.”

His experiences training and playing with the senior squad have not only benefited his on-field performances, but have also given him the opportunity to learn about life off the field.

“I would say nutrition is really important,” he said when asked about the most significant lessons he’s learned from experienced players like Joe Aribo and Sekou Mara.

“Eating well and exercising”
