JUST IN: Morgan Smithies leave the Warriors with a strong massage as he exit club

Wigan Warriors: Alternatives after Morgan Smithies reportedly expressed interest in the NRL

For 2024, the loose forward who helped the Wigan Warriors win the Grand Final, Morgan Smithies, has been rumored to join the NRL.
According to Examiner Live, highly regarded Smithies is almost certain to sign with Canberra Raiders before the Australian season the next year.

Following John Bateman’s return to Australia with Wests Tigers and the retirement of club veteran and captain Sean O’Loughlin at the conclusion of 2020, the 22-year-old was given the coveted Wigan number 13 jersey ahead of the 2023 season.

O’Loughlin, 40, who is now an assistant coach, received the number 13 from his brother-in-law Andy Farrell. Rugby league legend Ellery Hanley also wore the jersey while he was playing.

The NRL is apparently interested in Smithies because of his ascent to the top, which featured an outstanding 80-minute effort during Saturday’s 10-2 Grand Final victory over Catalans that included 55 tackles.

Prior to the upcoming season, coach Matt Peet has already actively recruited players for his pack, including Sam Walters of Leeds and Tiaki Chan of the Catalans.

Luke Thompson, a former St. Helens player who now plays for England, has also committed to a long-term deal after spending four years with Canterbury Bulldogs.
