Roy Hodgson, the manager of Crystal Palace, laments his team’s “woefully short” performance in their 4-0 loss to Newcastle United.

Jacob Murphy scored to break the tie after only four minutes, and then Anthony Gordon and Sean Longstaff added goals to make it 3-0 at the break. In the 66th minute, Callum Wilson added the Magpies’ fourth goal.

Palace had only given up seven goals in their first eight Premier League games into the contest, and they were only one point behind United in the standings. However, when the two teams clashed at St James’ Park, Eddie Howe’s hot squad defeated the visitors.

If I had to summarize it, Hodgson remarked, “I’d prefer not to think about it! We came into this match with the intention of giving Newcastle a good fight and perhaps making their lives a little more difficult, but we fell terribly short in that regard.

“Despite this being such a difficult game, I thought our first half was nowhere near what we’ve been able to do thus far or what I thought we would still be able to do,”

And because we let up even more goals than the four we gave up, we were attempting to salvage something from the game at halftime rather than leaving the field completely and absolutely defeated.

From our perspective, there isn’t much to be optimistic about, but I’m pretty sure you’ve just been listening to Eddie Howe, so I wouldn’t imagine you need much encouragement from me.

Although the winger’s cross-cum-shot over goalkeeper Sam Johnstone was deemed a “freak goal” by Hodgson, the manager had no complaints about the outcome.

The former England manager continued, “I thought we were rather unfortunate with the first goal, of course. That was ineffective. That bizarre purpose, I believe. Well-taken; [Kieran] added a lovely touch.

“If we had scored, I would have been thrilled, but it’s a difficult goal to have against you after a few minutes because that’s not one that resulted from your defense being completely out of sync.

By halftime, the game was already over.

Prior to their home Champions League match against Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday evening, Newcastle’s success increased their unbeaten streak to eight games.
