Collingwood fires CEO’s son, and unimportant employees quit

Son of club president Craig Kelly, Will Kelly, was delisted by Collingwood, who then re-signed three marginal players.

After five games in as many seasons in black and white, the 23-year-old was let go by the Magpies, providing a bittersweet epilogue to the Kelly family’s premiership.

Kelly was severely injured throughout his first three seasons, including dislocating his elbow on his debut in 2020. Under Craig McRae, Kelly had a better season in 2022–2023 but was unable to regularly qualify for the senior team as the Pies advanced.

For Kelly, the door is still open. The Pies have informed him that if there are openings for the pre-season supplemental selection period the following year, he will be given the opportunity to practice with the team throughout the summer.

Craig, Kelly’s father, joined the Magpies’ 1990 championship team that ended their drought and became chief executive in January.

Pies football manager Graham Wright said, “We thank Will for all that he has put in across five seasons with the club.”

“Will’s injury struggles have sadly prevented him from playing for the AFL team, but we should be proud of his strong resolve and capacity to grow through our VFL program.”

Jaiden Hunter, a midseason recruit for Essendon, has been awarded an additional year, while Jake Stein and Jeremy Sharp have been delisted by Gold Coast.

Fremantle expressed interest in Sharp, a wingman chosen with pick 27 in the 2019 draft, during the previous trade window, however Sharp stayed with the Suns when the two teams were unable to come to an agreement.

Young North Melbourne player Brayden George will have his preseason disrupted following surgery to realign his elbow, which he dislocated while at home in Wangaratta during the off-season. Although the Kangaroos don’t think the injury will prevent him from playing in the opening round,
