Key man joins Championship promotion hopefuls after Nottingham Forest exit

John Taylor, a senior executive at Nottingham Forest, has joined Coventry City as chief operating officer. This is a newly created role at the team with Premier League responsibilities.

Less than a day has passed since Sky Blues CEO Dave Boddy announced he will be leaving the team in January, nearly precisely seven years after he joined in League Two. Taylor, who spent six years at the City Ground until leaving Forest in September, will begin working at Coventry on January 1, 2024.

Taylor began his career with the Reds in 2017 as the Head of Finance. He then held the positions of Finance Director and Chief Operating Officer, managing the East Midlands team’s journey back to the Premier League through the Championship play-offs in May 2022.

As per the official statement released by Coventry City today, “Dave Boddy’s departure from the Sky Blues will be handled seamlessly thanks to his first-hand experience in a key role at another successful football club. He will also provide valuable insight and knowledge for Coventry City as they prepare to enter the Premier League.” In his new position, John will answer to Doug King, the Executive Chairman.

In September, Taylor made his decision to quit public on LinkedIn, stating, “After 6.5 years, I have decided it’s time for me to leave Nottingham Forest.” Having the chance to work for my boyhood club has been an honor. It has been an incredible experience that I will always remember.

In light of this, I’m open to new opportunities, whether they be temporary or long-term. I have extensive experience in the financial, operational, and commercial domains and am a qualified accountant with a high level of executive experience. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me if you have any opportunities, whether they are related to sports or not.

“I am delighted to be joining Coventry City FC as Chief Operating Officer in January 2024,” he posted on social media three months after leaving to join the Sky Blues. Excited to get going!”

After Tom Cartledge became the club’s new chairman, there were changes to the board that led to Taylor’s exit. He took over for Nicholas Randall KC, who is now the board’s non-executive director.
