Calgary Stampeders Re-Sign National DB Ahead of Free Agency

Malcolm Thompson, a defensive back for the National team, has extended his contract with the Calgary Stampeders, guaranteeing his place before he became a free agent in February. Thompson became a Stampeder on September 16 and has been a regular on the field. He recorded one defensive tackle and one special teams stop in four games during the regular season.

Thompson participated in the team’s 2021 training camp, therefore his relationship with the Stampeders goes beyond the 2022 campaign. He played for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers before to joining Calgary. In the 16 games that he has played in the CFL, Thompson has had 24 defensive stops, 8 special teams stops, and one fumble recovery.

Thompson attended Wilfrid Laurier University, where his football talent was on display while he was a student. Three times, he was named an Ontario University Athletics all-star, demonstrating his talent on the field.

The Stampeders’ plan to keep a talented roster as they get ready for the highly promising 2024 campaign includes this contract extension. Additionally, the team recently extended kicker Rene Paredes’ contract for an extra year, demonstrating their dedication to securing important player positions.

Thompson’s presence will be crucial for Calgary as they want to improve on last season, which included their appearance in the Western Semi-Final, by providing stability in their backfield. The CFL’s list of 2024 pending free agents and the new schedule have prompted teams—including the Stampeders—to work quickly to assemble competitive squads.

Following the CFL allows fans to be informed about all roster changes as teams, like the Stampeders, continue to reorganize their lineups in front of the upcoming campaign. Calgary is establishing themselves as a team to watch in the competition for the coveted Grey Cup with these calculated additions.
