Newcastle’s unusual Carabao Cup dilemma explained

At the conclusion of last month’s Premier League match between Chelsea and Newcastle, Lewis Hall was not permitted to play against his parent club.

Lewis Hall’s eligibility to play for Newcastle United against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup quarterfinal has been made public. On Tuesday night, the Blues and the Magpies will meet at Stamford Bridge in an attempt for both teams to win some hardware this year.

Chelsea enters the match having defeated Sheffield United handily the previous weekend, while Newcastle triumphed over Fulham to recover from their Champions League loss. Mauricio Pochettino and Eddie Howe will both be aware that winning the competition assures qualification for the Europa Conference League, even though their teams are currently outside of Europe.

There is still a lot on the line even though the Carabao Cup may not be as glamorous as an FA Cup or Premier League championship. After falling short against the Magpies at the end of the previous month, the West Londoners will need to perform at their highest level if they hope to return to Europe.

At St. James’ Park, Newcastle easily defeated Chelsea 4-1. And that was without Hall, who in the summer agreed to a season-long loan agreement with the Magpies that included a £28 million buyout obligation. After being declared ineligible the previous time out, the 19-year-old midfielder has been cleared to play against the Blues a few weeks later.

Chelsea make shock Lewis Hall decision ahead of Newcastle United clash in Carabao Cup

The Evening Standard reports that the Magpies have obtained’special dispensation’ to allow Hall to play against his old team. The Cobham alumnus has started Newcastle’s first two Carabao Cup matches this year, playing left midfield and left back.

Since leaving Chelsea, Hall has had few opportunities in the Premier League; however, he has made an impression in the EFL Cup, with impressive displays against both Manchester United and City. Permission has now been given for the teenager to continue his impressive streak in the competition at his former haunt.

Even though Chelsea has approved Newcastle’s use of Hall, Pochettino is still focused on getting his team to the semifinals. “It means more for the people than us,” stated the 51-year-old. It is really important to us because we want to perform well for our supporters and club.

“Winning is the most essential factor when delivering a trophy. It is a priority, extremely significant, and hard to quantify. It is very vital to have the chance to win a title. Our goal is to be prepared for the battle tomorrow in order to move one step closer to taking home the crown.

We must battle, be aggressive, and play better by acting and approaching the game in a manner consistent with our previous performance. We must continue to compete for every ball with the same attitude and strength.”
