Just In: New Orleans Saints owner announces a Major Project to Good Shepherd School

Gayle Benson, owner of the New Orleans Saints and Pelicans, has announced a substantial contribution as part of her annual “Month of Giving” efforts. This donation marks a significant moment for the Good Shepherd School (GSS) as it plans to establish a second location named The Gayle and Tom Benson Good Shepherd School – Giving Hope Campus on Desire Street.

Since its inception in 2001 by the late Fr. Harry Tompson, GSS has been dedicated to supporting underprivileged urban youth by providing them with an extended day, year-round, quality faith-based education. The institution goes beyond academics, offering ongoing guidance and assistance to break the cycle of generational poverty.

Gayle Benson highlighted the transformative power of education, expressing her desire to not only provide schooling but also lay a foundation for a future filled with potential for New Orleans children. She emphasized the importance of faith-based education in empowering young individuals, aiming to enable future generations to achieve their aspirations.

The Good Shepherd School has demonstrated outstanding achievements:

  • A 100% high school graduation rate among GSS graduates within four years, showcasing the school’s commitment to academic excellence.
  • The institution has produced 239 graduates, showcasing its long-term impact on students’ lives.
  • Over 85% of GSS graduates pursue higher education, with several already completing their degrees, and many more actively pursuing various college degrees.
  • Notably, 138 GSS graduates excel in local Catholic, private, and charter high schools, underscoring the school’s enduring success in shaping students’ futures beyond their time at GSS.

Thomas G. Moran, Jr., President and CEO of Good Shepherd School, praised Gayle Benson’s significant contribution, emphasizing the school’s ability to expand into the Desire-Florida community due to her generosity. He highlighted the rarity of this feat in today’s context where inner-city Catholic schools are facing closures, appreciating Benson’s embodiment of partnership in furthering GSS’s mission.
