Breaking News: Top star commits to Duke football after Texas exit

Shortly after deciding to depart from the Texas Longhorns and entering the transfer portal, Maalik Murphy has discovered a new destination. Recent reports indicate that he is set to join the Duke football program in North Carolina.

Murphy attracted considerable attention upon entering the transfer portal, with USC football and Georgia expressing interest in recruiting him for their teams. Baylor, South Carolina, and Oregon State were reportedly also in the mix. However, despite the appeal of these reputable programs, Murphy ultimately couldn’t resist the opportunity to play for the Blue Devils and make an immediate impact as a contributor to their team.

According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, there is a “verbal commitment” between Duke football and Murphy, and an official announcement is anticipated soon. With three years of eligibility remaining, Murphy will be ready to contribute immediately for the Blue Devils under the leadership of new head coach Manny Diaz.

Thamel’s report states, “Sources: Former Texas quarterback Maalik Murphy has verbally committed to Duke. A formal announcement is expected soon. He’ll be immediately eligible with three years remaining, giving first-year coach Manny Diaz a key building block to start his tenure.”

Maalik Murphy is poised to step into the role left vacant by Riley Leonard, who recently transferred to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. With both Quinn Ewers and Arch Manning staying in Texas, Murphy saw an opportunity for more playing time at Duke. In the 2023 season, Murphy demonstrated his skills with 477 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions in seven appearances, including two starts in relief of injured players.

It is anticipated that Murphy will excel with Duke football, and there is hope that he will lead the Blue Devils to new heights in the upcoming seasons.
