Top Deal: Nuno muscles Nottingham Forest into contention for top European player

Tottenham is facing a significant threat of losing the opportunity to sign Radu Dragusin, as reports from Italy suggest that their former manager, Nuno Espirito Santo, is spearheading efforts to bring the Genoa defender to Nottingham Forest instead.

The inadequacy of a sufficiently deep squad has proven to be Tottenham’s vulnerability this season, with numerous injuries and suspensions disrupting the excellent start they had under the management of Ange Postecoglou. While Tottenham aims for a fourth consecutive win against Brighton on Thursday, Postecoglou is well aware that his squad is already stretched to its limits.

The team’s resources are expected to face even greater scrutiny in the upcoming weeks, with midfielders Pape Sarr and Yves Bissouma heading to the African Cup of Nations and defender Cristian Romero sidelined for the next four to five weeks due to a hamstring issue.

Fortunately, the January transfer window provides Tottenham with an opportunity to address their persistent challenges, particularly in the center of defense. Ange Postecoglou has expressed a clear intention to bolster this area of the team.

This need became evident when, earlier in the month, he had to resort to using full-backs Ben Davies and Emerson Royal as an improvised defensive pairing during the trip to Manchester City. Given this circumstance, it’s challenging to dispute the rationale behind Postecoglou’s desire to reinforce the squad.

As a result, reports on Wednesday in the Euro Paper Talk suggested that Tottenham is nearing the completion of the signing of Genoa defender Dragusin, marking their initial move in the January transfer window.

Since his transfer from Juventus in the summer of 2022, the Romania international has solidified his reputation as one of the top defenders in Serie A.

Forest look to hijack Tottenham move for Radu Dragusin

Genoa acknowledges the difficulty of resisting a substantial offer for their prized asset, and they have indicated a willingness to entertain his sale if presented with a €30m (£26.1m) bid for the 6ft 3in center-half. While this price seemed to deter interest from Serie A clubs, Tottenham, reportedly on the verge of securing the 21-year-old’s signature, appears undeterred.

However, the situation is not as straightforward as initially thought, as former Tottenham manager Nuno is aiming to preempt Spurs’ pursuit of Dragusin. According to Corriere dello Sport, Nuno’s current club, Nottingham Forest, is ready to support their manager’s desire to bring in the 13-cap international. The report suggests that Forest has already initiated contact for a deal and is prepared to outbid other contenders, including AC Milan and Roma, in a potential auction. The competition between Forest and Spurs is now poised to determine the destination of the player.
