Furlani backs Pioli, but Milan strategy ‘changed’ by Growth Decree

Milan CEO Giorgio Furlani strongly criticized the repeal of the Growth Decree, cautioning that the landscape has shifted, impacting their January transfer plans. However, he expressed support for coach Stefano Pioli. The match against Sassuolo is scheduled to begin at San Siro at 17:00 GMT.

Last week, Furlani had expressed his concerns about the removal of the Growth Decree, which provided financial incentives and tax savings on salaries for foreign players, emphasizing that it would have detrimental effects on Italian clubs. The decision not to extend it until February 29 and let it expire on December 31 was deemed by Furlani as a regrettable choice for Italian football. He lamented the impact, stating that it makes Italian clubs financially weaker, less competitive, and undermines the entire football industry in the country.

Furlani further conveyed disappointment in the way football is perceived in the Italian economy, highlighting the need for a broader understanding of its role. He acknowledged Minister Abodi’s efforts to arrange a summit to discuss football’s economic significance in Italy but expressed frustration that the recent decision went against the interests of the football community.

“It’s not just Milan, but the entire Serie A that will be affected by this new law effective from January 1. Regrettably, we all have to factor it in when making transfer decisions,” commented Furlani. Milan, seeking reinforcements in the transfer window, now faces a different reality with the removal of the Growth Decree potentially impacting their strategy.

Furlani acknowledged the necessity of adapting to this new reality and expressed Milan’s readiness to seize opportunities, considering the club’s active involvement in the summer window. However, he emphasized the significant shift in the landscape starting January 1 and stressed that all Serie A CEOs and Presidents recognize the need for regulations to enhance competitiveness on a European level.

He highlighted the abrupt removal of the law without warning, making adjustment challenging for everyone involved. Regarding Milan’s current struggles, especially following the 2-2 draw with Salernitana, Furlani refuted reports of considering Coach Pioli’s dismissal. He emphasized unity within the club and the importance of providing the coach with a complete squad, with ongoing efforts focused on that aspect.
