The Reds face key January transfer window decisions

The most recent updates on Nottingham Forest’s developments, as the team confronts crucial decisions during the January transfer window.

Nottingham Forest has initiated important contract decisions, having already secured a one-year extension for Harry Toffolo’s deal on the first day of the January transfer window. However, there are still several crucial calls to be made in this regard. Toffolo, the defender, is now committed to the Reds until 2025 following the exercised extension option.

Forest now faces the task of determining the course of action for other players whose contracts are set to expire at the end of the season. Without reaching new agreements, these players may choose to depart as free agents during the summer.

In the current month, Nottingham Forest has a final opportunity to capitalize on players affected by expiring contracts. The club is confronted with the decision of whether to sell them, let their contracts naturally conclude, or present new contract offers.

Here, we examine the players whose contracts are slated to expire this summer. The duration of some contracts was not always disclosed at the time of the players’ signings.

Ethan Horvath: Excluded from the 25-man Premier League squad in the initial half of the season, the goalkeeper is likely to seek a move before the winter transfer window concludes. After experiencing regular playtime on loan at Luton Town last season, he is undoubtedly eager to rejuvenate his career.

Wayne Hennessey: Nottingham Forest faces a need to address their goalkeeping department, particularly given the unconvincing performances from summer acquisitions Matt Turner and Odysseas Vlachodimos. Whether the club decides to recruit another goalkeeper this month will be crucial. Hennessey is presently the third-choice goalkeeper.

George Shelvey: The club possesses an option to extend the young player’s contract until 2025. A loan move in January could potentially be beneficial for his development.

Loic Mbe Soh: The center-back, currently on a season-long loan at Almere City, has faced challenges securing playing time at the City Ground since his transfer from PSG in 2020.

Scott McKenna: Linked with several clubs, the promotion-winning player is one of those who could potentially leave Nottingham Forest this month due to a contract dispute, with Celtic reportedly expressing interest.

Willy Boly: Similar to the goalkeeping situation, central defense is an area that Forest will evaluate this month. The club aims to bring in a defender and is aware that some center-backs, including Boly, have contracts expiring in the summer. Despite being a key player, his future remains uncertain.

Felipe: The Brazilian’s fate is likely contingent on his fitness. After an outstanding performance in the second half of the last season, helping secure survival, he has faced injury problems and is currently sidelined with a hamstring issue.

Serge Aurier: Although there was interest in the right-back from Saudi Arabia last summer, he reportedly preferred to stay at the City Ground. Currently dealing with a calf injury, Aurier faces competition to reclaim his spot in the lineup upon recovery.
