Quarterback Dru Brown, a seasoned five-year CFL veteran, declared his retirement from football on the first day of the New Year.

Making the announcement via his Instagram account, Dru Brown reflected on a career that included stints with both the BC Lions and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, the latter of which spanned four seasons.

During his tenure, Dru Brown showcased his prowess in two Grey Cup games with the Ticats in 2019 and 2021. The age 26 years, set to enter free agency in February, played a total of 79 games, completing 769 of 1,122 passes for 9,636 yards. His track record includes 49 touchdowns and 40 interceptions, illustrating his impact on the field.

Last year, as a backup for the BC Lions behind Vernon Adams Jr., Dru Brown demonstrated his skills by making 71 of 103 passes for 829 yards, achieving four touchdowns and six interceptions.

His journey in Hamilton was marked by significant moments, such as stepping into the starting role after Jeremiah Masoli’s season-ending ACL injury in 2021.

This led the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. to a franchise-best 15-3 finish that season, although they fell short in the Grey Cup against the Ticats

Dru Brown also made history during a 2023 game against the Saskatchewan Roughriders, where he and Mason Fine became the first two Indigenous quarterbacks to face each other in a CFL game. Regardless of the challenges and changes in uniform throughout his career, Dru Brown consistently celebrated his Indigenous roots.

Expressing his long-standing aspiration to transition into coaching, Dru Brown assured fans via his Instagram post that he would soon unveil his next steps in the realm of football.

As he bids farewell to his playing days, the quarterback leaves behind a legacy of determination, resilience, and a commitment to showcasing his Indigenous heritage on the gridiron.
