Sunderland star player speech on Hull loss and explains next steps under Michael Beale

Luke O’Nien’s response following Sunderland’s 1-0 loss to Hull City at the Stadium of Light.

Luke O’Nien believes Sunderland is still in a strong position in the Championship table and doesn’t think the team should have lost to Hull.

Fabio Carvalho’s goal in the 71st minute gave the Black Cats a 1-0 defeat, and at the Stadium of Light, some of the home crowd yelled at head coach Michael Beale, “you’re getting sacked in the morning.”

“You can say it’s hard, but I also think we gave them too few opportunities,” O’Nien remarked. “The scoreline doesn’t seem to represent the good areas we were in, in my opinion. Clearly, that is the source of the disappointment.

You may argue that, as a young squad, we have lessons to learn, but after this weekend, I believe the team will be three points out of the playoffs. Three points out of the playoffs is not the end of the world; there have been worse circumstances in the previous three, four, and five years.

We put up a lot of effort, desired the points, and had some great moments while limiting their opportunities. We simply weren’t able to see the whole picture.

When asked what was discussed in the locker room following the match, O’Nien told the Echo, “We just talked about the game as a group.” Not much was spoken about the fact that we are here tomorrow and have meetings the following day. After the game, there is also a lot of emotion and disappointment. Whether it’s a win or a loss, we usually have a quick conversation here and there before the larger debrief the following day once the emotions have subsided. I’m sure a good number of individuals will rewatch the game tonight in order to gain new insight and learn greater lessons the following day.
