The Dallas Cowboys find themselves on the hunt for a new defensive coordinator following Dan Quinn’s departure to become the head coach of the Washington Commanders.
Among the potential candidates to fill this role is former Tennessee Titans head coach, Mike Vrabel, who, like Quinn, seeks to enhance his coaching profile by taking on the role of a defensive coordinator.
Patrik Walker of DallasCowboys.com identifies Vrabel and former Los Angeles Chargers head coach Brandon Staley as leading contenders for the position.
Walker suggests that Vrabel, Staley, and Ron Rivera, all of whom experienced dismissals as head coaches in the recent offseason, are in search of opportunities to rebuild their coaching brands—a path reminiscent of Quinn’s journey three seasons ago.
Despite Vrabel’s potential overqualification for the defensive coordinator position, the NFL coaching landscape offers no available head coaching positions.
Vrabel boasts an illustrious playing career, securing three Super Bowl championships as a linebacker for the New England Patriots.
Additionally, he has garnered recognition as a former All-Pro and Pro Bowler.
Vrabel’s coaching track record is noteworthy, having led the Titans to four consecutive winning seasons and guiding them to the AFC Championship in the 2019 season.
His achievements include being named Coach of the Year after the Titans’ 12-5 season in 2021, though the team faced challenges in the subsequent two seasons.
However, there is a potential downside to hiring Vrabel as the Cowboys’ defensive coordinator.
If successful in revitalizing the defense in 2024, he could become a strong candidate for the head coaching role in 2025 or beyond, creating the need for another defensive coordinator search for the Cowboys.
While internal candidates such as Cowboys assistant Joe Whitt were initially considered for the position, complications arise as several Dallas coaches, including Whitt, are expected to join Quinn in Washington.
The situation intensifies as the Cowboys explore the possibility of Ron Rivera, the former head coach of the Washington Commanders, as a replacement for Quinn.
As the coaching carousel continues in the NFC East, the Cowboys are faced with strategic decisions, contemplating internal promotions, potential external hires, and navigating the interconnected movements of coaching staff within the division.
