Washington Commanders Overhaul Roster as Combine Week Unfolds
As the NFL Combine takes center stage, teams are actively molding their rosters for the upcoming season.
Notably, the Washington Commanders are undergoing a significant transformation with the introduction of new General Manager Adam Peters and Head Coach Dan Quinn, signaling potential changes to the team’s composition.
In line with this, Washington has officially announced two roster cuts, with an additional move scheduled for the commencement of the new league year later this month.
Left Tackle Charles Leno Jr. and Tight End Logan Thomas are the casualties of the initial roster adjustments. The decision to release these seasoned starters will result in a substantial $13.8 million cap space savings for the team this year.
Leno, formerly cut by the Bears in 2021, swiftly became a cornerstone of Washington’s offensive line after his acquisition.
Serving as the starting left tackle for the past three seasons, Leno’s departure creates a notable gap that necessitates a replacement.
His tenure concluded last season on the injured reserve due to a calf injury.
Similarly, Logan Thomas, a former quarterback turned tight end in the NFL, is part of the roster overhaul.
Secured as one of Ron Rivera’s early free agent signings in 2020, Thomas held the starting tight end position when in good health.
Despite grappling with injuries during his Washington tenure, Thomas started in 49 regular-season games over four seasons.
However, the team has decided to part ways with the veteran, signifying a strategic shift in their offensive dynamics.
The changes in leadership, coupled with these roster moves, exemplify Washington’s proactive approach to revamping the team’s composition and addressing key positions.
