The SEC Player of the Year title was bestowed upon Dalton Knecht, the standout guard for Tennessee basketball, by the league’s coaches on Monday.
This accolade makes him the 10th Volunteer to receive the honor, breaking a dry spell since Grant Williams claimed it consecutively in the 2018 and 2019 seasons.
In his solitary regular season with the Vols following his transfer from Northern Colorado, Knecht showcased impressive statistics, averaging 21.4 points per game, along with 4.8 rebounds and 1.8 assists.
His shooting prowess was evident, boasting a 47.4% success rate from the field and an impressive 40.5% from beyond the three-point line.
During SEC play, the 6-foot-6 guard elevated his game, averaging a remarkable 25.5 points.
This stands as the second-best in the league over the past 22 seasons, marking the highest scoring average for any Division 1 player in the current season and the top performance among Power Six players in league play since 2019-20.
In response to winning the award, Knecht engaged with the media on Monday to share his thoughts.
Reflecting on how he learned about being named SEC Player of the Year, he mentioned that Tennessee basketball director of operations Mary-Carter Eggert and Jonas informed him simultaneously while he was in the training room.
