This figure proved burdensome for Green Bay, especially given Jones’ declining production in recent years.
Despite the desire to retain Jones, the Packers aimed to achieve this by requesting a substantial pay cut, reminiscent of their approach in the previous offseason.
However, this time around, negotiations hit a roadblock as Aaron Jones’ representatives deemed the proposed pay cut excessive.
According to insights from Matt Schneidman and Dianna Russini of The Athletic, the Packers sought an almost 50-percent reduction, if not more, in Jones’ salary.
Discussions commenced during the NFL Scouting Combine, but progress was slow, with the Packers reportedly making limited headway.
Although there were moments where the parties seemed to be closing the gap on Jones’ desired amount, the final verdict revealed a substantial disparity, ultimately leading to the running back’s release.
