The Mariners had excellent success with the right-handed reliever in 2022 and 2023. A UCL injury sustained the summer caused his 2023 to finish early. Thus, he was not actually part of the Braves’ 2024 plans.

The 40-man roster of Atlanta has room for this addition. Now, Atlanta had the option to just put Murfee on the 60-day injured list, but they decided to let him go. This does not imply that he will leave the club; rather, he may sign a minor league contract with the Braves in order to finish his rehabilitation.

Atlanta does a great job of letting players they release go to work for any Major League Baseball team that might be interested in their abilities as well.

The skill is there, as seen by his amazing first full season in 2022. He threw 69.1 innings, giving up 18 walks and 76 strikeouts while sporting a 2.99 ERA. This was sufficient for a very respectable walk rate of 6.6% and a strikeout rate of 27.9%.

The Braves should consider bringing him back on a minor league contract in the hopes that he can improve in the 2025 campaign. Watch House That Hank Built for updates about the Braves roster going forward, including whether or if Murfee rejoins the team.
