BEREA, Ohio — The Greetham Angle has outlined our thoughts on what the Cleveland Browns can do to position themselves to go to the next level over the course of the previous few off-seasons.
We outlined five actions the Browns might take to qualify for the playoffs before the 2023 offseason. With an 11-6 record and a postseason trip as the top wild card club, the Browns enjoyed a successful season.
Before the season started, the Greetham Angle predicted the Browns would finish 11-6 and qualify for the playoffs.
However, we probably wouldn’t have if we had known the team would be without its starting quarterback and Pro Bowl running back for the entire campaign.
The initial objective for 2024 is to return to the postseason; beyond that, the plan is to get to the AFC Championship game, if not the Super Bowl.
The defense, under the direction of defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz, was the team’s strongest suit after being completely redesigned in the 2023 offseason and ending the season as the NFL’s top-ranked defense.
According to overthecap.com, the Browns are now around $3.8 million under the salary cap following the first round of free agency transactions, which included the acquisition of wide receiver Jerry Jeudy and his three-year contract extension.
This summer, the Browns reorganized a lot of veterans to position themselves to add some important players. Jedrick Wills and Denzel Ward’s contracts have previously been renegotiated.
Deshaun Watson, the quarterback, would be a strong contender to have his $64 million salary cap amount adjusted.
Andrew Berry, the general manager, has stated repeatedly that the Browns would not be constrained by a lack of resources to take the required actions.
At the NFL Combine, Berry stated, “I think where the salary cap landed, that was in the range of our projections.” “I can’t claim that we’ve identified the number.
Although clearly there are more money available around the league, I wouldn’t say it has a fundamental influence on our plans. Nevertheless, markets may be affected when you consider free agency and extensions.
The Browns are determined to do whatever it takes to position themselves to contend for a Super Bowl in 2024 and beyond, as they start the third year of Watson’s $230 million guaranteed deal.
The Browns do not now need to make drastic roster changes like they did in the previous two seasons since, as of 2024, 16–17 of the 22 starters from 2023 are under contract, even with the return of injured players.
The Browns may follow these six strategies to help them in their quest to return to the postseason and beyond. While we acknowledge that it is extremely improbable that every demand would be satisfied, we nonetheless provide a number of solutions for critical positions.
