Speaking in public for the first time on Sneed’s departure was Chiefs head coach Andy Reid, who was in Orlando, Florida for the NFL’s annual meeting.
“One of my favorite guys ever,” Fantastic human guy,” Reid said on Monday, March 25, to NFL commentator Paul Kuharsky. “Despite being a fantastic footballer, he’s an even better person and as resilient as you could think. Thus, I’m his biggest admirer.
Reid responded, “You juggle the salary cap and it’s ridiculous what you have to go through,” when asked if making the deal came down to economics. “Players you can’t and should keep.”
The Chiefs were in a difficult financial situation with the re-signing of Chris Jones to a five-year, $158.57 million contract extension. Last month, during the NFL Combine, Reid told reporters that he hoped Brett Veach, the general manager of the Chiefs, would find a way to maintain Jones and Sneed. But that was just not possible. Sneed, 27, made it clear that he would not accept a wage decrease.
