The Giants have three off-season decisions to make.
Malik Nabers and Brian Burns are two guys the New York Giants have added to their roster, but their work is far from done.
If they want to participate in the NFC East, they need think about these three actions.
Exchange Darius Slayton, WR.
Before the 2023 season, Slayton agreed to a two-year, $12.2 million deal. He concluded the season with a career-high 770 yards, enough for 46th place among NFL receivers.
In an attempt to get a new contract, he skipped the team’s most recent OTAs, but he ought to be requesting a trade.
Slayton will never be the team’s top receiver with Nabers in the mix, so he must make room for younger guys like Jalin Hyatt and Wan’Dale Robinson.
The Giants would avoid having to pay Slayton’s $8 million salary cap charge in 2019 if they made a deal.
Unless he insists on playing for a different side, this is not the time to make contract demands.
Trim Darren Waller, a TE
In the hopes that Waller would return to his 2020 Pro Bowl form, when he caught 107 passes for 1,196 yards and nine touchdowns, New York traded a third-round selection for Waller in 2023.
Rather, he delivered them 12 games, 552 yards, 52 receptions, and one touchdown. In the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft, New York picked Theo Johnson of Penn State, with Waller reportedly considering retirement.
Johnson has an impressive 6-foot-6, 259-pound physique and scored seven touchdowns for the Nittany Lions the previous season.
only INWith Waller released in June, the organization could save $11.7 million against the cap and he could blend in nicely with free agency signings like Chris Manhertz and Jack Stoll.
CB sign Steven Nelson
Waller’s release allowed New York to add an experienced cornerback to start opposite Deonte Banks.
Dru Phillips, a third-round selection, is viewed by many as more of a slot corner, and even at age 31, Nelson is still a better choice than Tre Hawkins and Cor’Dale Flott.
During the previous season, Nelson led the Texans with 48 solo tackles, 12 passes defended, and 4 interceptions.
There isn’t much that Nelson hasn’t seen in his nine years of experience (eight of which have been as a starter) on four different teams, which should be helpful for new defensive coordinator Shane Bowen.
