The team that Texas basketball has assembled in recent years has been greatly influenced by the NCAA Transfer Portal. The transfer portal was certain to have an effect on the program’s direction and the roster-building tactics on the Forty Acres, given that Texas had replaced two coaching staffs in the previous four years.

Rodney Terry, the head coach, has done a decent job of building teams using the transfer portal that can at least compete for solid playoff runs in the NCAA Tournament.
In an attempt to improve the team heading into the 2024–25 SEC season, Texas has once again added some elite players through the transfer portal this summer. In order to complete the backcourt and wing rotations, Terry and the Longhorns recruited many transfers with instant effect this spring, along with depth in important positions.
However, there are still two ways to use the transfer portal. During the past several offseasons, a number of athletes that the Longhorns probably didn’t want to leave the school have found new homes through the transfer site. Since the 2021 summer, Texas has lost more than a dozen athletes via the transfer portal.

Rowan Brumbaugh, George
Guard in a redshirt rookie year As a gifted and long four-star point guard prospect from the east coast, Rowan Brumbaugh was recruited to Texas. In his true freshman year, he redshirted and showed great potential as a long-term guard.
But Brumbaugh left the program to join the portal over the offseason when former Texas head coach Chris Beard left last year. At the start of the 2023–24 season, he transferred to Georgetown.
Regretfully, Texas may have benefited from having a long guard come off the bench last season who could generate offense and consistently make three-pointers.
Brumbaugh performed admirably as a redshirt freshman at Georgetown the previous year. He shot well from outside the arc (37 percent) and from the free-throw line (78.9 percent) to average eight points, two rebounds, and three assists a game.
Brumbaugh is back in the transfer portal this summer for the second time in as many years after spending a year at Georgetown.
