Hugh Freeze discusses adjusting to recruiting through the transfer portal in today’s Auburn Tigers News, and Auburn football is among the top five for 5-star safety.
Student-athletes now have more options than ever thanks to the NCAA transfer site, which has altered the recruitment process in recent years.

In order to attract significant players, it is now more important than ever to make use of the transfer site. Auburn football has had some success with the portal, but there have been setbacks.

Hugh Freeze, the head coach, places a great value on connections, which are more difficult to build in the hectic realm of transfer portal recruiting than they are in high school recruitment.

According to The Montgomery Advertiser, Freeze stated, “You’ve got to try to prove to them that they should look at Auburn, initially on a phone call.” “With that, we’ve done alright.

However, despite many visitation schedules, they never make it to the campus. It’s a little odd for me that they’ve already determined where they’re going before we even get to see them.”

Although Freeze is still getting used to the new football team-building model, the Tigers intend to maintain their competitiveness in the future.

“The portal world, maybe we need to start trying to visit them as soon as you can instead of setting up for a weekend that never happens,” Free freeze added. “I’m not sure. It’s been difficult to work out.”

Football at Auburn is in the top five for 5-star safety.
The Auburn football team welcomed a group of prospects over the weekend, among them was 5-star safety Zelus Hicks.

The Carrollton, Georgia, native is rated as the 4 prospect in his state and the 2 safety in the recruiting class of 2026.

During his recruiting, Hicks has visited the Plains many times; his most recent visit was in January, which was this past weekend.

He mentioned that his close connection with coaches Charles Kelly and Wesley McGriff—who serve as his key recruiters—was one of the main reasons he was returning to Auburn.

Hicks intends to release a top-10 list shortly and hopes to make a choice by the end of the summer, even though he hasn’t formally narrowed down his list of programs yet. The Tigers are maintaining their position as the top choice for the 5-star safety for the time being.

Hicks stated, “Auburn definitely sits in my top five for sure,” according to Auburn Rivals.

“They have the facilities, they have the coaches, I’ve seen the development they’ve put into players, they got everything.”
