Tatum acknowledged that the Celtics underestimated the challenge of returning to the NBA Finals after their six-game series against the Golden State Warriors in 2023 under then-coach Ime Udoka.

“Maybe last year, us losing in the conference finals,” Tatum said when asked about the moment that shifted his perspective. “I expected that after we lost in 2022, it was guaranteed we were just going to keep coming .

Last year was a wake-up call to not take anything for granted because you never know how many opportunities you might have.”

The Celtics’ expectation of similar results under first-year head coach Joe Mazzulla proved misguided, despite the team’s increased talent. The addition of Sixth Man of the Year Malcolm Brogdon, while an upgrade over Aaron Nesmith and Daniel Theis, created chemistry challenges as Brogdon felt he deserved a starting role.

This internal discord contributed to the Celtics’ struggle in the playoffs. They needed six games to defeat the Atlanta Hawks in the first round, seven games to overcome the Philadelphia 76ers in the second round, and had to mount a comeback from a 3-0 deficit to push the Eastern Conference Finals against the Miami Heat to seven games.

Tatum’s candid reflection and current injury highlight the ongoing challenges faced by the Celtics as they strive for NBA success.
