Raiders Update News: Raiders Final Decision on Making “Major Veteran Acquisition”

Raiders Option to Maintain Current Roster Despite Significant Salary Cap Space.

As of June 1, the Las Vegas Raiders received a substantial boost to their salary cap with the removal of Jimmy Garoppolo’s contract. Despite the expectation of further moves, the team appears to be content with their existing roster.

Tashan Reed of The Athletic reports that the Raiders are focusing on the players they currently have. In a June 7 column, Reed wrote, “As the end of offseason team activities approaches with mandatory minicamp next week, the Las Vegas Raiders still have significant salary-cap space at their disposal.

According to Over the Cap, they have about $34.09 million in cap space, the sixth most in the NFL. Most of that space came from the money the Raiders saved by releasing quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo with a post-June 1 designation in March.”

Despite this additional financial room, the Raiders do not plan to make any major veteran acquisitions, according to league sources cited by The Athletic. Instead, they aim to preserve the money for in-season roster flexibility, potential extensions for current players, and rollover cap space for 2025.

While $34 million is a significant amount of salary cap space, Reed points out that the Raiders are only projected to have $24.2 million in cap space in 2025. Consequently, the team may be cautious about reducing that figure further by making additional signings at this time.

In summary, the Raiders are prioritizing financial prudence and long-term flexibility over immediate roster changes, opting to rely on their current lineup as they head into the new season.
