Sergachev, on the other hand, is currently under a long-term contract. He has seven years remaining on the eight-year, $68 million deal he signed on June 22, 2024. Notably, Sergachev does not have any trade protection until July 1. This means that if Tampa Bay wants to proceed with this hypothetical deal, they would need to finalize it before July 1, without requiring Sergachev’s consent.
During the last season with the Lightning, Sergachev participated in 34 games, tallying 2 goals and 17 assists for a total of 19 points. Despite suffering a broken leg last season, Sergachev was a crucial part of the Lightning’s Stanley Cup-winning teams in 2023 and 2024.
This proposed trade would be a significant move for both teams. For the Maple Leafs, acquiring a strong defenseman like Sergachev could address some of their defensive needs. For the Lightning, bringing in a talented forward like Marner could enhance their offensive capabilities.
