This move comes after the Tennessee Volunteers won their first national championship in the men’s College World Series, defeating Texas A&M 6-5 in game three. Despite this triumph, Schaefer, Villeneuve, and Lohry have chosen to leave the team.

The transfer portal will close on July 2, requiring any players who wish to transfer to submit their names by that date.

Villeneuve, who plays as a first baseman and outfielder, Schaefer, and Lohry, an infielder, made their decisions public on Monday.

They join four other Tennessee players who have already entered the portal.

pitchers Matthew Dallas, Wyatt Evans, Daniel Parris, and third baseman Zane Denton. This brings the total number of players leaving Tennessee’s baseball program to seven.

Each of these players has faced similar challenges. They were given early opportunities in the season and showed promise, but younger players eventually took their spots.

Villeneuve, for instance, had a batting average of .288 with five home runs and 22 RBIs this past season, but he struggled to secure a consistent position in the lineup.

Lohry started the season at shortstop but was soon replaced by freshman Dean Curley, resulting in Lohry spending most of the season on the bench.

Schaefer, a freshman, was considered a strong pitcher for Tennessee but did not perform as expected. He pitched only 8.2 innings over ten appearances and recorded a 9.35 ERA.

As the SEC season progressed, each player found it increasingly difficult to maintain their positions in the lineup.

However, despite their struggles, they still hold considerable promise in their respective roles, whether they decide to stay in Knoxville or transfer to another program.
