Texas’ Next Steps

Backup quarterback Maalik Murphy stepped in for Ewers and led a crucial scoring drive in the fourth quarter to secure a win for Texas, preventing an upset. Murphy, a redshirt freshman, has completed four passes in four appearances this season.

The 6-foot-5, 238-pound quarterback impressed during the offseason with his strong arm and athleticism. A former four-star prospect, Murphy was the No. 9 quarterback in his class, according to 247Sports, and joined Texas from Gardena, California.

Texas also has five-star true freshman Arch Manning on the roster, sparking interest among fans. While Sarkisian has not ruled out involving Manning in the game plan, he emphasized that Murphy remains the primary option.
