Edmonton Oilers Face Roster Changes as They Aim for Another Stanley Cup Run

On August 8, 2024, the Edmonton Oilers continued to navigate significant roster changes following their 2023-24 season, where they finished second in their division.

The departure of key players, including Vincent Desharnais to the Vancouver Canucks, has led to a reshuffling as the team aims to return to the Stanley Cup Final.

The Oilers have made strategic moves to compensate for these losses, notably adding forwards Stuart Skinner and Viktor Arvidsson. These acquisitions reflect the team’s commitment to bolstering their lineup after the offseason departures.

One of the most impactful losses was Warren Foegele, an effective forward who contributed across the lineup last season.

Foegele signed a three-year contract with the Los Angeles Kings on July 1, after a career-best season where he tallied 41 points (20 goals, 21 assists) in 82 games. He also added eight points in 22 playoff games, playing a crucial role in the Oilers’ postseason run.

In another significant move, Ryan McLeod, along with forward prospect Tyler Tullio, was traded to the Buffalo Sabres on July 5. In return, the Oilers acquired forward prospect Matthew Savoie.

McLeod had his best NHL season to date, recording 30 points (12 goals, 18 assists) in 81 games, along with four goals in 24 playoff appearances. His departure represents another shift in the Oilers’ forward depth.

Vincent Desharnais, a depth defenseman, signed a two-year contract with the Vancouver Canucks on July 1.

Desharnais provided steady defense during the 2023-24 season, contributing 11 points (one goal, 10 assists) in 78 games and one assist in 16 playoff games. His exit leaves a gap in the Oilers’ defensive lineup that the team will need to address.

Additionally, goaltender Jack Campbell signed a one-year contract with the Detroit Red Wings after the Oilers bought out the final three seasons of his five-year deal.

Campbell struggled last season, posting a 1-4-0 record with a 4.50 goals-against average and an .873 save percentage in just five games before being sent to the AHL.

These roster changes underscore the challenges the Oilers face as they aim to remain competitive in the upcoming season. With key players departing, the team’s new additions will need to step up if Edmonton hopes to make another deep playoff run.
