LATEST NEWS: Just In Auburn Basketball Current Departure Top Star Update…

On Tuesday, the NBA announced a list of 195 players entering the 2024 draft early, marking a notable shift for Auburn basketball as no Tigers were included, a first since 2017. This absence signals a departure from past seasons where Auburn players frequently explored their NBA prospects.

Last year, Johni Broome was among those testing the waters but ultimately decided to return to Auburn before the draft deadline. Previously, players have used the draft process to gauge their future but many chose to remain or enter the draft with promising prospects.

Auburn coach Bruce Pearl and his staff are facing a different scenario this offseason. With both Johni Broome and Dylan Cardwell having experienced the draft process twice, they had a crucial decision to make: either commit to the draft or return to college. Both have opted to return, alongside Chaney Johnson, a standout from Division II, ensuring that Auburn will retain most of its frontcourt from a successful 27-win season that included winning the SEC Tournament.

Jaylin Williams is the only significant departure from last season’s frontcourt. Despite this, Auburn benefits from having Broome, an All-American, and Cardwell and Johnson, who will both be entering their fifth college season. Pearl has highlighted the hard work and loyalty of these players, emphasizing their contributions despite not being highly ranked recruits. Their return could mean another strong season for Auburn’s frontcourt.

In contrast, the backcourt has seen considerable changes. Both of last season’s point guards, Aden Holloway and Tre Donaldson, transferred out, prompting Auburn to recruit JP Pegues from Furman. K.D. Johnson, a dynamic sixth man, also chose to transfer for increased playing time

. However, Auburn will retain two-thirds of its starting backcourt: Chad Baker-Mazara and Denver Jones, who each played crucial roles towards the end of the season, consistently scoring and defending. Chris Moore will also return for his final year, bringing his defensive energy and versatility.

Auburn is bolstering its roster with new talent as well. High school recruits Tahaad Pettiford, a 5-star combo guard, and Jahki Howard, a 4-star wing, are joining the team. Additionally, Auburn is still looking to fill some roster gaps, including a potential addition to the backcourt following Duke Miles’s visit and the cancellation of RJ Godfrey’s visit.

Overall, despite the usual turnover in college basketball rosters, Auburn is entering the 2024-25 season with significant experience and star power. The return of key players and the infusion of new talent position Auburn favorably for another competitive season, suggesting a promising future as they build on last year’s success.
