Mike Kolen, a prominent linebacker for the Miami Dolphins during their Super Bowl victories in the early 1970s, passed away on Sunday at the age of 76. His death was confirmed by Auburn University, his college alma mater, where he excelled as a player from 1967 to 1969 and earned All-Southeastern Conference honors twice. The cause of his death has not been disclosed.
Known for his aggressive playing style and nicknamed “Captain Crunch,” Kolen rose from being a 12th-round draft pick to a crucial player on one of the NFL’s most formidable defenses. He joined the Dolphins in the same year as Hall of Fame coach Don Shula and quickly became a starting linebacker.
Kolen played a significant role in Miami’s three consecutive Super Bowl appearances from 1971 to 1973. His playoff performance in 1971 included 11 tackles and an interception, while his contributions in the 1972 playoffs were pivotal in securing the Dolphins’ perfect season.
He set a personal record for interceptions the following season as Miami retained their title. After his final season in 1977, Kolen retired from professional football, having spent his entire career with the Dolphins.
Before his NFL success, Kolen had an impressive college career at Auburn, where his achievements were recognized with his induction into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in 1985. Auburn established an award in his name, given annually to the team’s leading tackler. Kolen frequently visited Auburn to present this award and cherished these moments, reflecting on his college experiences with great fondness.
In 2016, Kolen expressed his enjoyment in reconnecting with Auburn and honoring the players who followed in his footsteps. Despite his battle with Alzheimer’s, which he linked to his football career, Kolen maintained a positive perspective.
He published a book about the 1972 Dolphins and spoke about his football experiences with gratitude. Kolen emphasized his appreciation for the sport and the opportunities it provided him, expressing no regrets about his career.
