Atlanta Braves third baseman Austin Riley has been placed on the 10-day injured list after suffering a broken hand from being hit by a pitch during a game against the Los Angeles Angels on August 18, 2024. Initially, it was anticipated that he would be sidelined for 6 to 8 weeks; however, recent medical evaluations have indicated that he will not be able to return for the remainder of the season, including any potential playoff games.

The Braves are facing the reality of October baseball without one of their key players. Manager Brian Snitker informed the media that a CT scan revealed that Riley’s injury will not heal quickly enough for him to participate in the postseason.

In 110 games this season, Riley batted .256/.322/.461 with 19 home runs.

The injury occurred during a game where the Braves secured a 3-1 victory over the Angels, leading to Riley’s placement on the injured list the following day. While there was initial hope for a return in time for the playoffs, those prospects have now been dashed.

Riley’s absence will be a significant blow to the Braves as they aim for success in the postseason, emphasizing the impact of injuries on team performance during critical moments in the season. The team will have to adjust their lineup and strategy in light of this setback, potentially affecting their chances in the playoffs.
