The Pittsburgh Steelers’ much-anticipated rebuild is hitting a major snag as reports confirm that star defender Alex Highsmith is set to test free agency this offseason. Head coach Mike Tomlin addressed the media on Friday, expressing disappointment at the potential loss of one of the team’s key defensive players.

“It’s always tough to lose a player of his caliber, especially during a rebuild,” Tomlin stated. “We’ve had discussions, but ultimately, these decisions come down to factors we can’t always control.”

Highsmith, who has been instrumental in the Steelers’ defense alongside T.J. Watt, recorded a career-high 14 sacks last season, solidifying his reputation as one of the league’s top edge rushers. The 26-year-old’s departure comes at a critical time when Pittsburgh is looking to reestablish dominance in the AFC North following a lackluster 2023 season.

Sources close to the situation suggest that Highsmith is seeking a lucrative long-term deal that aligns with his rising market value. With the Steelers already juggling cap space and future draft picks, retaining Highsmith may not be financially viable.

Fans are reacting with frustration, questioning whether the team’s front office has a clear strategy for the rebuild. Meanwhile, rumors are swirling that Highsmith has drawn interest from several contending teams, including the Dallas Cowboys and Los Angeles Chargers, who are reportedly in the market for elite pass rushers.

As the free agency period approaches, the Steelers face mounting pressure to either restructure their roster or find a suitable replacement for Highsmith, a task easier said than done.

The offseason drama leaves fans wondering if Pittsburgh’s rebuild is truly heading in the right direction—or if the team risks sliding further into mediocrity.
