Washington Commanders’ first-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, has been released by the team, according to Zach Selby of the Commanders’ official site. Davis, once expected to be a cornerstone of Washington’s defense, has seen his role on the field decrease significantly this season. Initially a starter, he has transitioned into more of a rotational player, sitting behind mainstay defensive ends Dorance Armstrong (dealing with rib issues) and Clelin Ferrell.
During his three-year stint with the Commanders, Davis made a notable impact, recording 282 combined tackles, which included seven sacks, one interception, and contributions through two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.
He featured in 50 regular-season games, with 36 starts, showcasing his ability to contribute across the field. However, despite his solid stats, his consistency and overall performance didn’t align with the expectations set by his first-round draft status. This regression in his development ultimately led the Commanders to part ways with the linebacker.
At 25 years old, Davis now enters the market in search of a new opportunity. His skill set, highlighted by his tackling ability and moments of playmaking, could attract interest from teams looking to strengthen their defensive roster. As he evaluates his next steps, Davis will likely aim for a team that can offer him a fresh start and potentially a larger role on the field.
