Just In: Texas Longhorns In Doubt To Establish The Run Against Washington

Washington may not be renowned for possessing one of the most formidable defenses in the nation, but they have achieved success in impeding the running game, potentially posing challenges for Texas.

In regards to the defensive lineup of the second-ranked Washington Huskies, it doesn’t stand out as one of the more robust defenses nationwide. Specifically, they hold the 90th spot in the country for total defense, with their secondary struggling notably this season against opponents’ passing attacks. Nevertheless, navigating through a challenging schedule en route to the College Football Playoff requires some defensive prowess. In their case, while their pass defense may be lacking, they compensate with a solid run defense. They secure the 38th position nationally in rush defense, conceding only 133 yards on the ground per game and holding offenses to an average of 4.26 yards per carry.

The setback of losing Brooks in the latter part of the season was undoubtedly challenging, but Texas has managed to compensate with significant contributions from their trio of substitutes: CJ Baxter, Jaydon Blue, and Keilan Robinson. Each of these players brings a distinct element to the offense, and in the last three games, all three have taken turns leading the team in rushing yards.

As per PFF, Washington’s linebacker pair has proven to be effective in impeding the running game. Consequently, it becomes crucial for Texas’ offensive line to persist in generating openings, enabling the Texas running backs to make decisive downhill runs. A common attribute among all three backs is their elusiveness in open space. The key lies in creating opportunities and seizing them to fully capitalize on their agility and speed.

Additionally, as the running game thrives, the tasks become more manageable for Quinn Ewers and the passing attack.
