The Falcons’ offseason trade acquisition stands out among the NFL’s most advantageous deals. While Terry Fontenot, like any GM, isn’t flawless in the NFL draft, his proficiency shines in managing pro personnel.
Financially, the Falcons have made astute investments, particularly with key free agents proving their worth. Players like Kaden Elliss and David Onyemata have significantly contributed to Atlanta’s defensive resurgence. Jessie Bates, securing the largest free-agent contract under the new regime, has emerged as a standout safety in the league, even drawing consideration for Defensive Player of the Year.
Yet, it’s the impact of smaller-scale moves that has been profound. Cordarrelle Patterson, despite a quieter role this season, delivered career-best performances in 2021 and 2022. Another acquisition, Jonnu Smith, arrived from the Patriots, initially falling short of expectations set by his contract.
However, upon joining Atlanta, Smith agreed to restructure his deal. Teaming up with his former offensive coordinator, he’s undergone a career revitalization under Arthur Smith. As the 2023 season nears its end, Smith has set personal highs in both receiving yards (553) and receptions (47). Describing the success of this acquisition as anything less than exceptional would be an understatement.
