Bill Belichick, a six-time Super Bowl champion, interviewed this week for North Carolina’s head coaching position, Inside Carolina first reported on Thursday.
Since firing Mack Brown on November 26, the Tar Heels have reportedly spoken with a number of prospects, including Georgia defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann and Tulane head coach Jon Sumrall, according to Inside Carolina.
The original communication between Belichick and UNC officials was first revealed by Inside Carolina on Sunday.
Belichick and the Patriots mutually agreed to part ways on Jan. 11 2024 after New England stumbled to a 4-13 record, the team’s worst in his 24 seasons as head coach. Days later, he interviewed with the Atlanta Falcons for their head coaching position, but ultimately, the job went to Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris.
He spent the past year working several jobs in sports media. He joined “The Pat McAfee Show” for its NFL draft coverage in April and has appeared on the show weekly during the NFL season. He has also appeared on the “ManningCast” during ESPN’s Monday Night Football games and is an analyst on The CW Network’s “Inside the NFL.”
At the Power Four level, UNC is one of four available positions, along with Purdue, West Virginia, and UCF. According to CBS Sports, UNC has the best opening in college football. On Sunday, sports director Bubba Cunningham intensified the hunt for the next Tar Heels football coach as the team moved from Brown to its interim phase. Cunningham talked about his current search status and his plans for finding a new coach in an in-house studio interview that the school broadcast on Monday.
