It’s all a giant publicity stunt, part of the sometimes carefully orchestrated dance that is a coaching search. I don’t doubt for a second that Belichick interviewed with UNC athletic director Bubba Cunningham. And I certainly don’t doubt that

The idea of Belichick joining the college ranks is ridiculous for a bunch of other pretty obvious reasons. But first let’s look at why the interview with the Tar Heels is a symbiotically beneficial exercise.

Belichick desires to return to coaching. He was aware of this last year when he had numerous interviews with teams, including the Falcons. Just a hair ahead of Aaron Rodgers making headlines for taking a week of ayahuasca at a dark retreat, his failure to get a gig was likely the offseason’s biggest shock. From his weekly ‘ManningCast’ appearances to his Underdog Fantasy Sports podcast, Belichick’s extensive media engagement this season was a gift to all of us, and we should be grateful for the opportunity to learn about football from him every day, every week, or for whenever long. In addition to boosting his market worth, the interview with Carolina serves as a reminder to everyone that he takes coaching seriously.
