SKYSPORT NEWS: Nottingham Forest key player among aces to be offloaded in January transfer window

Scott McKenna of Nottingham Forest may be on borrowed time following his weekend rejection.

Nottingham Forest were defeated 2-0 by Manchester City on Saturday, and Scott McKenna’s time at the City Ground may be coming to an end. The Reds defender was not chosen to the 20-man team that will face the Champions League champions at the Etihad Stadium.

The central defender on the left side warrants no criticism. McKenna has proven to be a quality player as well as a very nice persona since joining Forest in the summer of 2020.

Scott McKenna: Can you tell me the story?

The man who has 29 caps for Scotland has given his all to the club. After several English clubs considered recruiting McKenna from Aberdeen, Forest took a gamble on him.

After a difficult first season with the club due to injuries, McKenna really came into his own in 2021/22. He was instrumental in the club’s promotion and missed only one Championship game all season.

He was crowned the club’s Player of the Year during that spectacular season, and he also received Man of the Match as Forest won the play-off final at Wembley.

McKenna performed admirably in the Premier League last season. He appeared in 24 games but missed some of the season due to a hamstring injury he suffered in February.

Could McKenna now depart from Forest?

It would be a sad day, but the 26-year-old could simply be a victim of the times. Forest are now a Premier League club, and a difficult decision must be made.

McKenna’s contract expires in the summer of 2024. As a result, if an offer comes in, he’ll be able to talk pre-contract terms with abroad clubs as early as January.

Against Burnley, the defender got away with some questionable defending. When Sander Berge handled, a goal was ruled out.

Simply put, he may lack the necessary speed to perform consistently effectively in the Premier League. He’s a good squad option right now if Steve Cooper wants to play three at the back.

With Murillo and Andrew Omobamidele joining Joe Worrall, Willy Boly, Moussa Niakhate, and Felipe as central defense alternatives, McKenna’s future looks dismal.

He was not named to the 20-man team for Saturday’s match against Manchester City. With that in mind, this may be Forest’s way of suggesting they’re getting ready for life after McKenna at the conclusion of the season.
