Auburn Bolsters Secondary with Addition of Texas Safety Jerrin Thompson via Transfer

The Auburn Tigers continue to make strategic moves in the transfer portal, and their latest acquisition is Jerrin Thompson, a seasoned safety with four years of experience contributing to the Texas Longhorns.

Thompson’s decision to transfer brings a valuable asset to Auburn’s football program, particularly fortifying their secondary, which faced significant departures as Jaylin Simpson, Zion Puckett, D.J. James, and Nehemiah Pritchett transitioned to the NFL Draft.

Thompson made an immediate impact in his freshman year at Texas in 2020, showcasing his skills in 10 games with 14 tackles, a pass breakup, and an interception.

His sophomore season in 2021 saw continued growth with 41 tackles and three pass breakups. However, it was in 2022 that Thompson truly excelled, earning 82 tackles, an interception, and seven pass breakups.

His stellar performance garnered him an honorable mention for the All-Big 12 team, as recognized by the league’s coaches. In 2023, Thompson continued to contribute significantly with 38 tackles, three interceptions, and seven pass breakups.

Thompson’s decision to transfer to Auburn followed an official visit to the campus over the weekend. During his visit, he engaged with key figures, including head coach Hugh Freeze and Auburn’s secondary staff led by Charles Kelly and Wesley McGriff.

Additionally, newcomers Terrance Love and Sylvester Smith, 2023 signees, and CJ Johnson add depth to the position. Auburn has also secured promising talents in its 2024 recruiting class, including JUCO safety Laquan Robinson, Kensley Faustin, and Kaleb Harris.

Thompson’s transfer was not without competition, as Florida was actively pursuing him and had an official visit scheduled.
