Mack Brown is a legendary figure in college football, having been a coach in one capacity or another for almost three times as long as many of his players have been alive.
Beginning with his first (and eventually final) season at Appalachian State in 1982, Brown is currently in his 36th season as a college head coach. He is the oldest head coach in FBS football at 73 years old. With 279 victories at the FBS level, Nick Saban is currently the sport’s active leader in lifetime wins after retiring from Alabama following the 2023 season.
While North Carolina is now recovering after a 70-50 loss to James Madison, where the Tar Heels tied the most points they have ever given up in a game in program history, Brown’s squad is off to a 3-1 start. After the game, Brown reportedly warned his teammates that he was leaving, a claim he had to deny. Brown described his team’s performance as “embarrassing.”
