Jake DeBrusk has ended his stint with the Boston Bruins after leaving in NHL free agency.
Drafted in the first round in 2015, DeBrusk played a key role for the Bruins over seven years.
Despite his contributions, DeBrusk’s time with Boston is often remembered for his trade request during the 2021-22 season, stemming from dissatisfaction with his role.
In a recent interview on The Cam & Strick Podcast, DeBrusk shared his thoughts on the situation.
He noted that with the team’s evolving dynamics and his uncertain position in the lineup, coupled with being benched in the previous year’s playoffs, he felt a fresh start was necessary.
“Just with the way the team was shaping up when it came to looking at where I could possibly play in the lineup and things like that and how the [previous] year ended, I got scratched in the playoffs, and I was just thinking about a fresh start for both sides,” DeBrusk explained.
He believed he was fighting for his career at that point and felt he had more to offer than the opportunities he was given.
Frustrated by the lack of serious consideration for his initial trade request, he reiterated his desire to move on. DeBrusk mentioned that he had asked for a trade out of Boston on two separate occasions, highlighting his determination to seek a change in his professional path.
