Although both parties opted not to file for arbitration and there’s a slim chance of an offer sheet, the general consensus is that an agreement will be reached.
Swayman’s impressive record speaks for itself. He has achieved 79 wins, a 2.34 goals-against average (GAA), a .919 save percentage, and 12 shutouts in 132 NHL games. Last season, he played a career-high 44 games, securing the starting role in Boston.
His performance led the Bruins to feel confident enough to trade Linus Ullmark to the Ottawa Senators.
Swayman’s 25 wins, 2.53 GAA, .916 save percentage, and three shutouts solidified his position as Boston’s number-one goalie.
However, this situation has given Swayman’s camp more leverage in negotiations, as the Bruins now need to secure a deal.
Comparisons to other goalie contracts could influence Swayman’s deal.
Juuse Saros, who is four years older, signed an eight-year, $61.92 million contract ($7.74 million AAV) with the Nashville Predators when he was approaching unrestricted free agency.
Similarly, Connor Hellebuyck inked a seven-year, $59.5 million deal ($8.5 million AAV) with the Winnipeg Jets before last season at age 30.
Thatcher Demko, at 25, secured a five-year, $25 million contract ($5 million AAV) with the Vancouver Canucks.
Notably, Andrei Vasilevskiy, also at 25, signed an eight-year, $76 million contract ($9.5 million AAV) with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2019 after winning the Vezina Trophy.
The Bruins must carefully navigate these financial waters to retain Swayman, whose performance has proven invaluable.
The comparisons to other goalies’ contracts highlight the potential costs involved, and the rising salary cap only adds to the complexity.
